In a world where we are more aware than ever of the impact of our choices on the environment, it’s crucial that we always re-evaluate our sustainable practices. In October 2020, we joined prAna’s Responsible Packaging Movement and committed to eliminate single-use plastic and virgin forest fibre from our packaging, as well as excess packaging waste in our supply chain.
The first part of the commitment was easy, as we never use single-use plastic in our packaging. To better understand how we could eliminate virgin forest fibre, we reached out for help from EcoEnclose - a packaging company that focuses on sustainable solutions. With their expertise, they helped us re-examine all aspects involved with creating our shipping boxes: What materials we use? Where the raw materials come from (i.e trees)? And most importantly, the impact of these choices.
Our learnings?
While FSC and SFI certifications are the bare minimum, as they ensure the sustainable management of the world’s forests, we wanted to know if there was another way to craft our boxes to be more environmentally conscious. So, EcoEnclose suggested we switch to recycled content boxes made with 100% recycled content and 95% post-consumer waste.
What does that mean?
According to EcoEnclose, recycled content means lower carbon emissions, new resources are not harvested, and recycling markets are strengthened. Recycled content can be "post-consumer" (material that has been used by a consumer or a business), or "post-industrial" (scraps from the manufacturing process).
After some testing and customer feedback, we decided to proceed and are very happy with our new shipping boxes. Our new boxes offer the same durability as our previous boxes and they are curbside recyclable as well as naturally biodegradable.
Going forward, almost 95% of our orders will be shipped using our new 100% recycled content shipping boxes, fully customized with earth-friendly HydroSoy inks. We hope to get to 100% in the future and with EcoEnclose as partners, we are sure to get there.
Next challenge - examine eco-friendly upgrades to packaging used in our supply chain.
