Takasa laundry 101 - how to wash and care for your organic cotton

Laundry. Something we all have to do as a part of everyday living. Takasa products have been designed and curated for long-lasting durability and functionality, whilst maintaining a beautiful aesthetic. Here at Takasa, we have a few basic recommendations to help care for your purchases alongside encouraging a mindful approach to caring for the environment. Reducing our environmental footprint stems from our desire to reduce waste. Our journey of learning and sharing is at the cornerstone of all that we endeavour to do.

use eco-safe detergents

Takasa products are made naturally and are best cared for naturally. For best results, we recommend to wash using eco-safe detergents that are free of dyes and chemicals, and drying naturally in sunshine. Ideally, we recommend using a non-toxic and biodegradable laundry detergent from an ethical company that only uses natural, plant-based ingredients. We understand that natural laundering isn’t always an option - best practices for machine laundering are provided below for each of our products.

say no to fabric softeners

Avoid using fabric softeners as Takasa Organic and Fairtrade Cotton products get softer with every wash. You see, most linen companies coat their sheets and towels in a chemical that makes the cotton softer, which is why department store sheets and towels are soft to touch at first and then get crispy and hard as you wash them, unless you use fabric softener. Well, with Takasa products, you can put the softener aside and just wash with a nice biodegradable laundry detergent. 

how to deal with stains? 

• skin creams, oils, and hair dye
• fabric-to-fabric transfer when fabric is wet (i.e. sweat or when washed with a different colour)
• general dirt and soil

how often should you wash your bed sheets? 

Fresh sheets are always going to bring about a better sleep. We recommend changing your bedding once-a-week or once every two weeks, to keep things clean and fresh. The Sleep Foundation is a great resource on this topic.

organic cotton product care guidelines:

washing your bed sheets - every 7 to 14 days

Wash your bed sheets in cold water. Hang dry for best results, or tumble dry on low and remove promptly. Warm iron as necessary. Wash every 7-14 days.

washing your pillow cases - every 7 days

Wash your pillow cases in cold water. Hang dry for best results, or tumble dry on low and remove promptly. Warm iron as necessary. Aim to wash at least every 7 days.

washing your duvet covers - frequency depends on if you use a flat sheet

Wash your duvet cover in cold water. Hang dry for best results, or tumble dry on low and remove promptly. Warm iron as necessary. If you use a flat sheet, wash every 4-6 weeks, otherwise wash along with your sheets.

washing your wool duvet inserts - semi-annually

We recommend refreshing your wool duvet insert by periodically hanging it outdoors in the fresh sun.

Spot clean as needed. For stained items, add a dose of live cultured enzymes (such as Bac-Out by Biokleen) during soaking.

Can be machine washed in cold water on soak and spin cycles only. Do not use the wash cycle, which agitates and can ruin your comforter.

Drape in the sun or a warm place to dry. Do not wring or machine dry.

washing your down duvet inserts - semi-annually 

We recommend using the services of a professional eco-friendly dry-cleaning service to care for all of Takasa down filled products. 

If you need to spot clean, do so as follows;

• Move the down away from the area you wish to clean.
• Use a mild soap or spot remover and gently rub it into the stain.
• Rinse well with water; try not to wet any of the down.
• Use either a hair-dryer to dry the wet patches or place into a dryer and set on air fluff only.

washing crib sheets - 7-14 days

Wash crib sheets in cold water. Hang dry for best results, or tumble dry on low and remove promptly. Warm iron as necessary.

washing muslin wraps, bibs, burp clothes and swaddles - as often as needed

Wash before first use in cold water on gentle cycle. Hang dry for best results, or tumble dry on low. Do not iron.

washing your towels - every second use

Wash your towels in cold water. Hang dry for best results, or tumble dry on low and remove promptly. Warm iron as necessary.

*For natural coloured towels, we recommend using the dryer on low for the first few washes to remove the extra fluff.
